At the same time, I have been a regular visitor to the Khap areas and have also attended some of their gatherings. I have also conducted a pilot study in the Khap dominated area of Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar. This pilot study was conducted through random distribution of the questionnaire with the purpose of taking the opinion of the people living in the Desh Khap (which is the area of my fieldwork). During my stay in Baoli village of Badaut I also interacted with the local population in order to gather information on my research subject.I also conducted a few interviews in the same area with the Khap leaders of the largest Khap of Western Uttar Pradesh, I also analyzed the records of series of Khap meetings that were held in Badaut by the Desh Khap and the Baliyan Khap before my visit.
I also attended National Conference on theme “Honour Killing: The Mind & The Mindset: Challenges and Remedies” organized by Department of Political Science and Nehru Studies, University of Rajasthan during 12th and 13th January 2013. During my three day stay in the Rajasthan University campus I also interacted with scholars working on my subject and visited libraries in the surrounding areas for collecting published material on my research topic.
Further, I have also written my first chapter that introduces the Khap system with its origin and definition along with a discussion  on the different customary forums of dispute resolution  that exist in different parts of India. Variations in Khap system or similar organization prevalent in different communities like Pals in Meos, Jigra system of Pathans, Khaps among Jats, Gujars and Rajputs, village councils in Karnataka and Panchayati in Hyderabad have been elaborated upon. I have also analyzed the different works that have already been done on the Khap system. The source material utilized for the chapter are the research papers, administrative reports, district gazetteer, Khap records and the published as well as unpublished thesis that have dealt with the Khap Panchayats.
I also attended a Workshop on the topic Preventive Measures to Eliminate the Crimes of “Honour Killing” organized by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, COHS, CCS HAU, Hissar on 25th and 26th February 2013. The workshop was sponsored by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
Further, I have written a research paper on Assimilation of Clan Based Leadership and   Institutions in Diverse Forms of Colonial Administrative System in South-East Punjab (1849 -1950) which focuses on the inclusion of the clan based identities in British administrative arrangements and their utilization.
I also attended the Sarvkhap Panchayats held at Mehm, Palwal, Badaut etc. The Sarvkhap panchayat at Meham was convened on 29th January 2013 by Tulsi Grewal of Meham Chaubisi Khap for discussing the prevention of honour killings. Heads of different khaps from Haryana participated in the panchayat. Another important Sarvkhap panchayat was organized on 9th February 2013.
I intend to utilize the second installment of my fellowship for my fieldwork in Rohtak and Baghpat districts for two months where I would:
1) Be conducting a survey among the university level students of the Khap areas in order to study their opinion and acceptability of traditional justice system of Khap Panchayats
2) Be interviewing prominent leaders of different Khaps located in Rohtak and Baghpat region and studying their records in detail
3) Be interacting with eminent scholars and researchers who possess a vast amount of knowledge about the topic
4) Be attending Khap meetings in order to gain an in-depth knowledge about their functioning and influence among the people in general.
I request you to kindly release the second installment of my fellowship so that I can start my fieldwork soon and utilize the amount for the same purpose.
